What are Harmonics?

Harmonics are electrical distortions caused when non-linear loads (like DC chargers) interact with the power grid. Instead of drawing a smooth sinusoidal current, they introduce voltage and current waveforms that are ‘polluted’, affecting power quality.

Why are Harmonics a Problem?

  • They can overheat transformers and cables
  • Lead to nuisance tripping of protection devices
  • Cause malfunction or damage to nearby sensitive equipment
  • Create compliance issues with grid standards

In short: if harmonics aren’t properly managed, they can make your shiny new chargers more of a liability than an asset.

The ENA Notification Rules

Before energising any new EV installation, particularly those using DC fast chargers or involving three-phase power, you must submit an application or notification to the Energy Networks Association (ENA).
Failing to do so? You might be asked to turn off your chargers until compliance is achieved. That’s lost time, money, and credibility.

How Evlution Can Help

At Evlution, we don’t just install EV chargers — we design smart, compliant, future-proof infrastructure.

✅ We always follow the ENA notification process
✅ We assess harmonic impact during design
✅ We work with DNOs to ensure your install is grid-compliant
✅ We offer remedial advice if your current setup is causing power quality issues
