Committed to sustainability, decided to invest in electric vehicles (EVs) for its fleet to reduce carbon emissions. To support the transition, they sought a reliable and efficient charging solution for their electric waste collection lorries.
Our Solution
After thorough research and consultations with industry experts, the waste recycling company chose the Virta Global CSMS solution, the Alpitronic HYC 150kW DC electric vehicle charger and EVlution for the installation works. The Alpitronic HYC 150 charger was selected for its robust design, high power output, and compatibility with the charging requirements of heavy-duty electric lorries. The Virta CSMS was chosen not only for its reliability and functionality but also for Virta’s added expertise in the fleet charging solutions marketplace. We at EVlution developed the electrical design, layout and programme followed by the mechanical, electrical and civil installation, commissioning and electrical testing of the charger.
The site is a highly industrial area with lots of heavy plant movements, noise and dust. Our standard RAMS in conjunction with the job specific RAMS were utilised alongside our daily risk assessments during the delivery of the installation.
For various reasons the client requested that the job be delivered as a temporary installation enabling the movement of the charging unit to a new location in the future. For this reason, the supply cables were installed above ground. This required a cable bridge over a pedestrian walkway for the 75mm2 4 core SWA cable. Additionally, to ensure the earthing arrangements met the required standards an earth mat was installed under the charger base foundation. Heavy duty impact protection was required to protect the charger form large vehicle movements.

Installation Process
The installation and commissioning process involved collaboration between the client, Virta, Alpitronic, and the EVlution certified installation team. The following steps were undertaken:
- Site Assessment: A thorough assessment of the charging site was conducted to determine the optimal location for the charger and to ensure compliance with safety and regulatory standards, power availability and cost of installation works.
- Electrical, Mechanical Civil and layout designs.
- Production of Programme, RAMS and Safe Systems of work.
- Electrical Infrastructure Upgrade: The existing electrical infrastructure was upgraded to accommodate the high power requirements of the Alpitronic HYC 150kW charger. This included the installation of appropriate mains switches, cable management and cabling.
- Charger Installation: The HYC 150kW charger was installed following the manufacturer’s guidelines and commissioned by our Alpitronic approved commissioning team.
- Integration with Virta’s CSMS: The charger was integrated with Virta’s CSMS, allowing for seamless monitoring, control and management reporting of charging activities.
- Training and Handover: In conjunction with Virta, training sessions were conducted for operational staff to ensure they were familiar with the charger’s features and the CSMS capabilities and operation.
